Therely Bare", an exhibition of non-objective art curated by John Tallman and Ron Buffington, will feature the work of 16 artists from around the world, including the United States, Paris, Belgium, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

...Working in a style sometimes called reductive, these artists share a subversive approach to the traditions of painting. The exhibition title is wordplay, an inversion of "barely there." It also hints at the curatorial premises of the exhibition. Although the physical presence of the work in the exhibition is not in question, the conceptual motives behind the work are more difficult to determine. In this sense, the work is hiding in plain sight. "Therely Bare" challenges typical modes of viewing and raises questions about perception itself.

Highly collected and valued, Matthews' work has been published in many books and is held in museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Here are installation shots from our current show in the School of Art Gallery. The Show - Reunion - is curated by the filmmaker Richard Myers and features the work of Mary Ann Flynn-Fouse , Marlene Mancini Frost , John Opie , Susan Opie , Edward Pramuk , Harry Wheeler and Robert Wick.

This show is a reunion of seven artists of immense talent and influence. They all studied at Kent State School of Art with the exception of Sue Opie. They and their work are a rich part of the School of Art’s history. I studied here with them in the middle 50's.

Recently I discovered that the School of Art was established in 1941, and the man who encouraged all of us, Elmer Novotny, became the director in 1946. In essence, the artists in this show were students here only 13 years after the School of Art was established. In all fairness there was a department of Art in 1927 and in 1913 there was a department of Public Art under the direction of Nina Humphery, but "the School of Art" wasn’t a reality until 1941.

This reunion group was some of the earliest students and some of the most influential artists of that or any other period. I was in awe of them then, and have deep respect for them as artists and individuals now! They left Kent and became producing artists and teachers, educating thousands of young students in Ohio and across the country.

We have all remained friends for the past 50 + years. It is an honor to reunite them in this ‘tribute’ show.

A Little bit of Warhol for your Fall

It's been an industrious Fall 2008 so far. I had a great group of folks working in the gallery over the summer and we were able to get things done on a level that I think sheds light on the special qualities of this university. Sarah Burris, Emily Sullivan and Lesley Sickle all spent time working on the install of the Warhol photos that were donated to the School of Art Gallery Collection over the summer of 2008. They were lead by Joy Armstrong who curated the show and who was my assistant over the past two years. The show looks great and it was nice to be able to have Lesley here to learn the ropes as she has taken over Joy's job now. Joy like all students has moved on to bigger and better things, but this little show I think is a nice way to send her off. It shows her professionalism and her commitment to do a good job - qualities that I hope will take her far. Spring wrap up

It was a busy Spring for the School of Art Galleries. We had some great shows. From German prints to ceramic sculpture, we offered a variety of new visual experiences on a monthly if not weekly basis. The thing that happened that I most proud of this Spring was a benefit auction for the Thomas D. Little prize for Excellence in Printmaking. By all accounts, it was a great success and was one of the few times in my now ten years at this university where I felt like I was part of a team working together to make something happen. My thanks go out to all those involved.

So now it summer and time for the The Artists Network of Kent 2008 Group Show. T.A.N.K. as the group is called has had a summer exhibition in our Downtown space every year since the group formed. I enjoy it, as it brings together a group of hard-core arts patrons that live in Kent - even in the summer time. I hope to see you at one of the galleries!-Anderson

Bitten by the Art Bug

When I learned that Anderson gave students the opportunity to curate a show at the downtown space, I immediately jumped at the chance. The idea of being able to create a show of my own vision and also get a chance to show my own work seem too good to be true, yet he gave me the go ahead and so the work began. The most surprising thing I learned is how far in advance we plan our shows. All our shows are booked an average of a year in advance, which left me with a good amount time to get everything ready. During this time I was able to work closely with the artist who also exhibited, and we were able to organically come up with the concept. The idea of what it meant to be domestic and what this environment meant to the individual intrigued us all. The best part of this experience is seeing this vision develop and come into reality. It’s an overwhelming, and sometime scary, feeling having all your hard work been seen by the general public, but the show was a great success and we received great reviews from individuals and the press. The one thing this experience has done is sparked within me the desire to continue in this line of work.

Getting it going

Things have been pretty busy so far in our new Downtown Gallery space. We've had events every weekend for about six weeks and we averaged a little over 200 or so people for each one. Staggering numbers for the gallery in comparison to our previous 8 years. Not that we haven't had events with that number of people, rather that we're able to have event after event with a nice turnout for each one. So, it goes without saying that the space has been well received by the community. I've included a photo of one of our employees (Greg) holding an orange cone for a couple of reasons. 1) It's funny. 2) Even with all the crowds, we've been steadily continuing to work on finishing the space. I want to say thank you to all our patrons for their patience.

It's official, we've opened our new Downtown Gallery location! The reception for the 2007 Faculty Show got the space off with a bang! Over 200 people came to view the show and the new space and I think everyone was pleased with both. It was a pretty tough hall to get it all done. Our new landlord Bob Mayfield (co-ownwer with his wife Cass of McKay Bricker Galler & Framing - http://www.mckaybricker.com/) has ben a trooper and has worked everyday for about 8 or so weeks to get us to a point to where we can open. Thanks Bob and Cass! Of course he wasn't alone in getting things done, the tech for the School of Art, Brian Sullivan also went above and beyond the call of duty as did many of the gallery staff at one time or the other. Thanks need to said to the Director of the School of Art, Christine Havice, Ph.D, for helping make this all happen and to Joy Armstrong (assistant to the Director of Galleries- me) for being a steady force in the world. It's been a lot to get done and the power outage 4 hours before the opening only added to multitude of memories I'll have of this space. It truly is a beautiful place, if you find yourself in Kent, Ohio - please stop on by.

It's been a wild whirlwind month. Firt the installation of the 2007 Drawing Invitational
with Pierogi Flat Files has been great. We've had a terrific response to the show with several of area colleges stopping by to take a look. The Akron Beacon Journal and the Cleveland Freetimes gave nice reviews and the foot traffic has been steady throughout the entire month. I can't say enough about the quality of the work Darice Polo the curator of the show chose to include. I can allways tell if a show is good if after a couple of weeks I still enjoy looking over the gallery. This is one show I'll miss having the opportunity to look at everyday.

August 2007 Eells show

We just finished setting up the August 2007, Eells Gallery at Blossom Music Center exhibtion - Subversive Surface: Counter Use
a ceramics invitational curated by Sherman Hall, Editor, Ceramics Monthly Magazine & Anderson Turner, Director of Galleries, Kent State University, School of Art. It was great to see all the work in person and not in e-mailed pictures. If you follow the links on the website to the current exhibtions in the Eells gallery, you can download a copy of the PDF. If you get there after this summer, look to past shows and you still be able to find a PDF of the catalog. The Eells Gallery is a challenging space to put shows in. We get great crowds, but it's an open air gallery (i.e. no climate control) and it can be pretty hard on art objects. This climate problem for the most part does not apply to clay, so I found it somewhat humorous that the weather seemed to be trying to push all our buttons why we were setting the show up. The daily temp was about 95 degrees. It's a great little show. If you're out watching the Cleveland Symphony perform, please stop in.

My First Show At Eells

When Anderson asked me to be the Gallery Director for the Eells Gallery at Blossom Music Center for this summer, I was both flattered and terrified. I knew it would mean taking on a big responsibility that I was afraid would be a bit over my head, but I was excited to try something new. Little did I know what was in store for me with my first show as director of Eells…

Brinsley Tyrrell, Emeritus Professor of Sculpture for Kent State University was to be our first show of the season, carving huge blocks of salt into works of art. An amazing artist and awesome all around guy, Brinsley was the perfect foray for my introduction into the world of gallery direction. Little could I imagine how difficult these things were going to be to install, though! It took a terrific group of guys, a 16-hour day, and a forklift (along with a little political maneuvering) to put quite a few tons of salt, wood and sandstone into and around the gallery, but boy, was it worth it… the show looks great, we had a beautiful reception on Saturday, July 7th, and I’m ready for the next show, a ceramics invitational. I think the next one should be a little easier to install… I don’t think we’ll need a forklift for this one.

The last reception in our 223 North Water Street space

It's been a fun (and quick) two years for the Downtown Gallery at 223 North Water Street. As many people already know, in the fall the Kent State University, School of Art, Downtown Gallery will be moving. There will be more on that at a later date. Today I would like to say thanks to our landlord Steve Balazs for being a great guy and to my boss Dr. Havice for helping to keep a unique thing like a commercial gallery run by a university going. The current location, 223 North Water Street in Downtown Kent has been in many ways a transitional space. While I loved the building from the first look, I have missed the Main Street presence the school enjoyed with our prior incarnation Gallery 138. The future looks great for the School of Art Galleries downtown Kent presence. Soon I'll be able to report about our exciting opprtunity to bring some higher profile shows downtown that I believe will help to change people's perceptions of Kent, Ohio.
